Default Folder X: What's new in this release

February 16, 2018

Version 5.2.2 delivers a speed boost, new AppleScript commands, interface enhancements and important fixes.

If you already bought Version 5, this update is free.

If you are upgrading from version 4, this may be a paid upgrade for you.

If you have a Default Folder X license purchased before June 1, 2015, there is a $14.95 upgrade fee for this version. If you purchased on or after June 1, 2015, your upgrade is free and your existing serial number will work in version 5.1.

What's new in version 5.2.2

Feature enhancements:

  • Default Folder X's performance has been improved, especially the time it takes for its controls to first appear next to a file dialog in High Sierra.
  • New AppleScript commands let you remove recent files, recent folders and default folders.
  • Placeholder text makes it clear where to enter comments and tags.
  • The group headers in the Shortcut preferences are more prominent to reduce confusion about when particular shortcuts are active.
  • If you set NSFileViewer in user defaults via Terminal, Default Folder X will use that application instead of the Finder to open files and folders when they're selected from its menus. To use ForkLift, for example, enter "defaults write -g NSFileViewer -string com.binarynights.ForkLift-3" in Terminal.

Bug fixes:

  • Fixed a bug that could leave a file dialog stuck on screen with a spinning progress indicator.
  • Corrected a problem with Default Folder X not working with file dialogs in Keyboard Maestro and LaunchBar.
  • Solved an issue where Default Folder X would intermittently fail to work with some dialogs, notably the one brought up by InDesign's Place command.
  • Default Folder X now works correctly with file dialogs brought up while changing its own preferences.
  • The "Hide Extension" checkbox will only be automatically turned off in save dialogs when you have a default folder set for the current app and it depends on the filename's extension. Previously, the checkbox was turned off if any default folders depended on the filename extension, even when they didn't apply to the current application.
  • Corrected a problem with Default Folder X's drawer in the Finder not appearing when using a Wacom tablet.
  • Fixed several crashes.

As a long-term Mac user, i have installed demo software beyond count. Yours is one of the few that I've seen the worth in investing in.

It's one of those programs that I wonder how I lived without for so long. Before I was constantly clicking through directories every time I wanted to open, save or attach a file. Now I do almost everything in just a few clicks.
